Description:
Aerial view looking north with Babbington Colliery, Cinderhill at top right. The road prominent in the centre is Carters Wood Road, petering out at what would later became Assarts Road. Nottingham Road runs across the picture immediately below the Colliery with the dual carriageway A610 parallel. The administrative boundary between Broxtowe and Nuthall is roughly along the bottom of the picture.
A newspaper cutting accompanying this picture includes details of Babbington Colliery: 'Top right is Babbington Colliery, Nottinghamshire's oldest coal mine (130 years). It was feared that the colliery woould have to close, but roadways have been driven into the Blackshale seam where an estimated 6 million tons of coal lies, enough to prolong the life of the pit by many years. The Blackshale seam is already being worked by Hucknall and Bentinck collieries. Blackshale coal is recognised as a good power station coal and Babbington is one of the nearest pits to Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station. It is expected that Babbington will begin to produce Blackshale coal in the spring. The old spoil tips of the pit have been landscaped into grassy hills'.
Babbington Colliery eventually closed in 1986 and the site was redeveloped as the Phoenix Business Park.
