Description: The crowds in the street in front of the shops on South Parade have probably gathered to cheer see the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) opening the new Council House, built in the Market Square between 1927 and 1929 by Cecil T Howitt. The employees of one business on South Parade have piled onto their balcony to view the event. The Market Square is the biggest in Britain at 5.5 acres, and was once home to the famous Goose Fair, before it became too large and was moved to the Forest Recreation Ground.
