Description: Plumptre's Hospital, one of the most ancient of Nottingham's charities. The name Plumptre derives from a Norman-Medieval Nottingham family. In 1392, Plumptre Square was founded by John de Plumptre, who endowed it for the support of a Master, a Priest and thirteen poor Widows. It was renewed in 1650 by Huntingdon Plumptre and extended and repaired in c 1751 by his grandson, John Plumptre and after he died in 1751, by his son John in 1753. The building seen here was opened in 1825. The Hospital consisted of 13 dwellings. The present building occupies the site of the ancient one. There are 30 out-pensioners of this charity. Newer almshouses have also been built on Canal Street.
