Description: Drury Hill was one of the oldest streets in Nottingham, until its demolition in 1968 to make way for the 'Broadmarsh Shopping Centre'. The hand-carved sandstone caves seen here date from the 13th century. Nottingham was an important leather producer during the 15th and 16th centuries and the Pillar Cave features the remains of Britain's only medieval underground tannery. The 'Caves of Nottingham' opened as a public attraction in August 1994, where the aromas of the tannery 'smell box' can be experienced to show how the caves might have smelled when in use.
