Description:
Looking south towards Low Pavement showing the Old Rose Tavern and Rose Yard. Many of the buildings in this area had sandstone caves beneath them: these are man-made caves cut into the sandstone, to make workshops and store rooms. This picture is probably copied from an earlier engraving to depict a scene c 1819. The artist Charles Gerring moved to Nottingham in the early 1880's where he was an antiquarian book seller who also wrote books on book binding. He later moved out to Gedling and wrote the 'History of the parish of Gedling', published in 1908. He was involved in organising The Notts Volunteer Regiment 1914-19 and wrote a history of the regiment published in 1920. He later moved back to Nottingham and lived in the Collins Almshouses on Carrington Street, during which time he was often seen around the town painting or sketching. He died in 1936.
