Description: Showing the superstructure of one of the working shafts, giving access to the construction workers of the Nottingham Trunk Sewer. This was the main trunk drainage system of the gravitational sewer. The width of the trench shown here was 10 foot, with the brick sewer being 7 foot (which didn't allow much space for working). This picture is one of a series taken for the City Engineers office during construction of new mains sewers-water drainage system. This huge civil engineering project was undertaken all over Nottingham. The civil engineering contractors for these works were Harold Arnold and Son Ltd (Doncaster, Nottingham and Leeds). It was part of similar initiatives all over the country, and was partly done at this time to provide employment through these years of economic depression as well as the obvious reason of providing more adequate drains for a city that had expanded considerably over the previous 100 years.
