Description: Robert Lowe - Viscount Sherbrook [1811-1892] Stateman and Chancellor of the Exchequer. This portrait is taken from 'Brown's worthies of Notts'. He trained as a barrister and travelled to Australia in 1842 where he played an active role in politics until 1850. On his return to England, Lowe was leader writer for The Times and entered parliament two years later. He occupied posts in successive governments in the 1850s, distinguished himself as a speaker in the Reform debates of 1866-7, and finally attained cabinet rank as Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1868-73, and Home Secretary, 1873-4, in Gladstones first administration. He was raised to the House of Lords as Viscount Sherbrooke in 1880.
