Description: Thomas Sandby (1721-1798), the renowned English architect and water-colour painter, was born at Nottingham in 1721. Thomas probably commenced his career as a drawing master in Nottingham with his more well known brother, Paul. In 1742 they went to London and engaged on military maps and plans. Thomas settled as an architectural designer and draughtsman, attached to his Royal Patron at Windsor. The brothers continued to work together, developing new engraving techniques. In general his works show evidence of great talent but his occupation left him little time to produce many. He died in 1798.
