Description:
A date stone discovered in a wall at Thurgarton Priory during excavations carried out by Boots Building Maintenance Department (under the direction of the late Mr H Price).
The inscription 'WC' refers to William Cooper and the partly reversed date is 1598. A house was constructed in the sixteenth century on the site of the claustral west range of the Priory following its dissolution. This was replaced by a Georgian mansion in 1777.
