Description:
The east side of Alfreton Road was within the borough, while the west side was in Radford. Nos 2 to 168 in 1881, as far as Forest Road West, contained five public houses as well as small shops with living accommodation. They included all the usual food shops, as well as craftsmen such as boot and shoemakers, braziers, tinnex brush and basket makers. There were also two essential finance houses - pawnbrokers - and there were 30 in the town listed in the directory. The shops in this photograph have been demolished and new modern buildings erected. The bank on the right, however, still remains.
