Description:
The major improvement of the decade was the transfer of the open market to King Edward Street, the creation of the processional way, the demolition of the old Exchange and its replacement by the Council House, designed by T. C. Howitt. Although criticised by some at the time, and later by Pevsner, it is now recognised as the symbol of Nottingham.
The Old Market Square has since undergone a multi-million pound new revamp.
