Description:
L-R: G. Buck (264), Dayton (262, clock and watch repairs), Keston (260) and W Saunders (258).
Picture the Past website contributor Carl Hebb adds: 'In 1962 these shops were occupied by Merrikins (258, sold vegetables), Hebb's (262, watch and clock repairs), then a cafe (260A), next Old Nellie's house (260), and on the corner of Prince Street opposite the Jolly Higglers pub, Mr and Mrs Parker's general provisions shop (258). I lived at Hebb's shop with my parents until May 1964 when we left for Cornwall. It is really nostalgic to see our block on Ilkeston Road. We did not have a record in photo form and it brings back so many happy memories of family Christmas parties behind the shop in the late 50s to 1964. I remember breaking a wrist on roller skates outside 262 just before we left for Cornwall and my father's Ford V8 Pilot parked on the road outside - sadly long gone to the scrapyard. It was always Simonized on a Sunday; it could be done in those days safely without too much traffic. Still can remember the trolley buses which sometimes lost contact with the overhead cables and had to be re-applied with a pole. Happy times!!!!'
