Description: This area was demolished in c 1929. See NTGM000653 and ...654. All the houses were replaced by some of the first purpose built council houses. Narrow Marsh lay beneath the cliff on which stands the Lace Market. (Some of the factories on it can be seen here). The area was notorious for its slum dwellings and outbreaks of cholera and other diseases. See NTGM001893 and NTGM001890 which shows the lack of sanitation and open drains. This photograph shows some of the caves carved out of the soft Bunter Sandstone which can be found all over the area, rising from the natural course of the river Leen, from around the Castle and along the Lace Market to Hollowstone. They were used for habitation and storage, often with houses being built right up to them. Tours can be made now in the caves which lie next to Broadmarsh shopping Centre.
