Description:
Peppercorn A1 Class 4-6-2 No 60124 Kenilworth heading The Flying Scotsman over Muskham water troughs (hence the spray under the carriages).
Number 60124 was constructed at Doncaster Works by British Railways (but to an outstanding London and North Eastern Railway order) in 1949 and was one of the first locomotives of its type to be painted in BR Brunswick Green livery (as seen here) in 1951. It was withdrawn from service in 1966 and scrapped. The name Kenilworth was taken from the novels of Sir Walter Scott.
This photo has been hand-coloured from a monochrome original.
Website contributor John A Thickitt adds: 'Notice that the engine was, at this date, fitted with a chimney with an unlipped top. This chimney type on the A1 Class was subsequently replaced.'
