Description:
Immaculately turned out Great Northern Railway Ivatt 'Small Atlantic' 4-4-2 No 250 poses for the camera in Ollerton station with the London and North Western Railway royal train. King Edward VII used the station on a number of occasions, both when King and previously when Prince of Wales, usually in connection with visits to Doncaster Races, Ollerton being a convenient railhead for staying at the various ducal residences in North Nottinghamshire.
Ollerton station was opened by the Lancashire Derbyshire and East Coast Railway in 1897 and closed to regular passenger services in 1955. This view is looking west with the photographer probably standing on the stairway of the signal box.
The presence of a GNR loco on LDECR metals would seem to emphasise the Doncaster origin or destination of the train (Doncaster was the hub of the GNR system), while the presence of LDECR horse box No 228 in the right background is also indicative of race traffic.
