The Hermitage is a long range of perpendicular rock, overlooking the vale of the Trent, and is dotted with caves. Many brick houses have been built up against the rock, and these caves are used as living space. Showing houses to the east of the railway bridge, built against the rock, and the railway bridge in the distance. The houses were demolished in 1904.
