Description: Looking north from Canal Street, showing the dome of the Council House, built in 1927-9 by Cecil T Howitt, in the background. Narrow Marsh lay beneath the cliff on which stands the Lace Market. The area was notorious for its slum dwellings and outbreaks of cholera and other diseases.
