Description:
The photograph originally came from the Guardian Journal.
Cooper Street was the first Street making your way up Alfred Street Central situated on the right just before the Public House of the Bay Horse on Hutchinson Street. Going up Cooper Street on the right was the Corona Soft drinks factory and then before a few houses was the Bilby Almshouses a very large house. At the top of Cooper Street was Peas Hill Road and on the other side was Edgar Rise which led up to a short cut to Robin Hood Chase.
In the early 1960's these were 8 flats each of just 3 rooms. Through the arched front doors to the building was a staircase up to the 2nd floor. There was a front door to 4 flats per section. The door led onto a living room with a coal fireplace on the opposite wall and a built in floor to ceiling cupboard in the fire place alcove. The door that led to the back of the flat contained a very small scullery with a stone sink. At the side of the kitchen and bizarrely through a door leading off it was a small bedroom with very draughty sash windows. The kitchen and the bedroom together were the same length as the living room and formed the whole of the flat. (Additional information kindly supplied by Gloria Bradshaw).
