Description:
The leading vehicle is transporting Roger Hall's Dive Bomber ride, a regular at Nottingham's Goose Fair for 25 years.
The Dive Bomber
The Dive Bomber was a fairground ride manufactured in the USA by the Eyerly Aircraft Company and in the UK (under licence) by Lusse Brothers of Blackpool. It was first introduced into the UK in 1939 and around 25 examples were built over the ensuing 10 years, remaining a feature at various fairs until the 1980s.
Described as the 'first true thrill-ride', it consisted of twin cars mounted on a vertical rotating arm with the cars spinning on their own axles. While the rider was never turned upside down, it was still quite an unnerving experience. In later years some operators combined two machines to give a doubled version.
Picture the Past is grateful to website contributor Chris Jackson for identifying this ride.
