Description: A detailed view taken from the right half of a stereoscopic photograph. These pictures were viewed through a special hand held viewer which combined two virtually identical images into one to give a three-dimensional picture. This scene shows the ferry trapped in the ice downstream of Lady Bay Bridge. The last freeze of the Trent occurred in Jan-Feb 1895. For 10 days the river was frozen and safe for skaters, and a hockey match was held between Newark and Burton-on-Trent, near to Averham Weirs. There are other pictures of the freeze showing people skating on the ice and although the local inhabitants appear perfectly at ease, several fatalities due to thin ice were reported on the river.
