Description: NEWDIGATE HOUSE was erected about 1675 and is, therefore, contemporary with Nottingham Castle as we now know it. The building is in itself a satisfying study of early Renaissance design. It was built for the family of Newdigate, the well-known Lion's paws of whose arms may be seen on a faded hatchment in St. Nicholas' Church (information from www.nottshistory.org.uk). It was, from 1705 to 1711, the residence of Marshall Tallard, taken prisoner at Blenheim in 1704. This engraving of 'M. Tallard's garden att Nottingham' was originally published in The Retir'd Gard'ner by London & Wise, 1706. Also published in Britannia Illustrata, and reduced by J Goeree and reproduced in Les Delices de la Grand Bretagne.
