Description: Showing an early locomotive engine and train heading towards the Kings Meadow area (today this would be roughly where the Lenton South Junction is). This was part of the Midland Counties Railway, opened from Derby to Nottingham in 1839. The MCR became a constituent of the Midland Railway from the 10th May 1844. Note the chimneys on the left which are in Lenton. Lenton Sands and the Park are still seen here as open fields lying to the right of Lenton, and beyond are the houses on the Ropewalk next to Castle Rock. Further to the right is the stumpy tower of St Mary's Church. This engraving is the frontispiece to 'Original Rhymes' by Lucy Joynes.
