Nottingham Castle has its roots in the Norman Conquest when William the Conqueror erected a castle on the 130 foot sandstone bluff. This commanding position near the river Trent ensured it would became a major royal fortress and military base during the Middle Ages – Richard III rode out from Nottingham Castle to his final battle at Bosworth field and Charles I summoned his subjects to his standard here in 1642, so starting the Civil War. Much of the original castle has gone having been replaced with a Ducal Palace. It is now a popular tourist spot with a Museum, art gallery and caves to explore.
