Description: This view has been taken from a point above Oliver Street, looking north east. In the bottom right-hand corner is the boundary of the General Cemetery followed by Cromwell Street, Portland Road and Raleigh Street. It is on the latter that the Church of All Saints has stood since 1864. The road running from right to left is Waverley Street, the upper part of which, according to the Borough Records of 1659, was then called Bowling Alley Hill. Half way up this hill is Arboretum Street with the park bearing that name which opened on 11 May 1852. Nottingham High School, founded in 1513 by Dame Agnes Mellers, was originally called the Free Grammar School but was re-named in 1868 when moved to its present site. At the top right-hand corner of Waverley Street is the Vernon Arms, the first mention of which appeared in 1869. Forest Road is well screened by the trees and the top of the photograph is taken up by the Forest Recreation Ground and Church Cemetery, where the first interment was in June 1856.
