Description: Taken from above Third Avenue, looking east. The Mansfield Road Baptist Church, which was opened in 1913, is on the far right, at the junction with Gregory Boulevard. The earliest development in Sherwood Rise took place about 1840, with the building of the four narrow avenues which are at the base of the photograph. On the opposite side of the road (l to r) are Pelham Avenue, with Regency House on its corner, followed by the Astra Hotel, then Clumber Avenue with the Polish Catholic Club and centre. Also shown is the old Great Central Railway line which was opened to traffic in April 1899. Here was Carrington Station, which closed to passengers in September 1928. Clarendon College (centre) had its official opening in 1961. This has since become part of New College, Nottingham. Between the college and the Mansfield Road is the John Farr Rest Garden. In the centre of Mansfield Road is the Savoy Hotel which has since become the Moathouse Hotel.
