Description: Narrow Marsh and the densely populated Red Lion Street area lay beneath the cliff on which stands the Lace Market. This whole area was demolished in the late 1920's-early 30's. See NTGM000653 and ...654. All the houses were replaced by some of the first purpose built council houses. Seen here is the Victorian St John's Church, Leenside, built in 1844 by Sir Gilbert Scott. This would have served some of the local community during its earlier years of dense overcrowding, and which would have seen its congregation diminish as the slums disappeared. St John's church was bombed in the May 1941 air raid and was later demolished.
