Description: This picture is taken from the front of the sales catalogue of Messrs Pott and Neale, and hand tinted by Miss Beryl Whittaker. Lenton Hall is thought to have been designed by the architect and builder William Stretton for John Wright, a Nottingham banker (John Wright was one of the founders of the Butterley Company, and involved in the construction of the Nottingham Canal.) The land was purchased in 1798 and the house seems to have been completed and occupied by 1804. The area of the grounds of Lenton Hall in the mid-19th century was about 130 acres. The hall was extended in 1937, at which time it was renamed Hugh Stewart Hall. Hugh Stewart (1884-1934) was Principal of University College, Nottingham from 1929-34. It was extended again in 1969. Hugh Stewart Hall is a hall of residence at Nottingham University.
