Description: The last freeze of the Trent occurred in Jan 1895. For 10 days the river was frozen solid in Jan-Feb and safe for skaters, and a hockey match was held between Newark and Burton-on-Trent, near to Averham Weirs. Prior to that date the river had frozen in 1884 (but the style of the clothing seen here suggests that this picture is 1895). Here people are walking and skating on the ice photographed by Trent Bridge looking towards Lady Bay Bridge on the West Bridgford side of the river. Although these local inhabitants appear perfectly at ease, several fatalities due to thin ice were reported on the river. See also NCCE000620 of skaters at Newark.
