Description: William Howitt (1792-1879) was an author and the husband of author Mary Howitt. The Howitts were among the pioneers in the education of the common people in the first half of the nineteenth century, and were lovers of nature and quietness, being members of the Society of Friends. He was a chemist and druggist, first in Lower Parliament Street (the site of the shop now part of the Victoria Station) and later on South Parade. He wrote twenty two books.
