Description:
The Gregory Hotel was known by residents of the area as 'Scarpellos', this being the name of the landlord in the early part of the 20th century.
The junction of Ilkeston Road, Radford Boulevard and Lenton Boulevard was known as 'ations corner' as it had at its four extremities a school (Education), public house (Damnation), pawn shop (Salvation), and church (Redemption).
Website contributor Carolyn Hallam comments: 'Your listings for the 'ations' are different to what I have found on another site where it has 'education' (school), 'damnation' (pub), 'salvation' (church) and the fourth one, where a butchers was most recently but which used to be a pawnbrokers, is listed as 'ruination'. Just contacting you out of interest - I don't know which is correct.'
