Description:
Junction with Prince Street.
The shops to the side of the Jolly Higglers were occupied for many years by La Roche's, a pork butchers of some renown where Friday nights were faggot night, and people queued with their basins to collect the faggots and gravy.
Picture the Past website contributor Carl Hebb adds: 'A bit more information - next to the Jolly Higglers was La Roche, the opposite block across from the then Ilkeston Road School (still standing) had Coco the clown, the toyshop lady who used lots of lipstick, hence her nickname; next was the chip shop, a few houses, then the last shop was Wilde's and the newsagent next to the YMCA. Opposite again was Moon's Garage.'
