Description:
Meadow Lane as seen from near its junction with Hermitage Square. The houses were built by the former 'Ambergate, Nottingham, Boston and Eastern Junction Railway' for their employees. The company was absorbed into the Great Northern in 1861. On the left is the Great Northern line which was opened in 1899 into Victoria Station, and right is the shadow of the bridge that carried the original line from Grantham, first into the Midland Station on Station Street (closed 1904) and later into the GN's own station on London Road (opened 1857). Photo taken from the east end of the ex-GNR's Cattle Dock on Meadow Lane, the Cattle Dock was inset to the left of the photo.
Fred Richardson and his wife lived in the detatched house shown in the image, no. 484 Meadow Lane. He used the line everyday to go to work as the Cartage Foreman at the London Road Goods Department at 4 a.m every morning for over 40 years.
