Description:
Looking south-west from New Road with the ex-Midland Railway Nottingham - Mansfield railway line to the right. At the time the photograph was taken this route had been closed to passenger traffic for two years but in 1993 it reopened as part of the current Robin Hood line, linking Nottingham, Hucknall, Kirkby in Ashfield, Sutton in Ashfield, Mansfield, Shirebrook and Worksop.
The nearest tracks served Radford Colliery, which was in existence from 1898 until 1965, while the typical Midland Railway signal box in the background was Radford North, abolished on 6 February 1966. That its closure had already taken place by the time the photographer arrived is suggested by the fact that all the signal arms have been removed from their posts. The houses to the right are in Southfield Road, while the bonded warehouse of cigarette manufacturers John Player & Sons, together with Radford Gasworks, can be seen in the distance.
