Description: Bennerley Viaduct carries the Great Northern Railway across the Erewash Valley between Awsworth and Cotmanhay (Derbyshire). It is 1,100 yards long and is constructed of cast iron. Being a trestle girder construction it is unique. The line it carried was originally London Rd Station via Basford North (Basford and Bulwell). Nottingham Victoria was built in 1899 and didn't link to that till then. After that trains using the Butterley viaduct ran to both stations. The viaduct still remains. The line was closed to passenger traffic in 1964 and to goods in 1967. The viaduct is now awaiting demolition. This photograph, taken from halfway up the embankment on the Awsworth end, shows the southern aspect of the viaduct. Two thirds of it are in Nottinghamshire and one third in Derbyshire.
