From north-west. Number 170 was still in use as a confectionery and tobacconist at the time of the photograph and was owned by Arhur Willetts in the 1950s.
The shop next door was Alma's Ladies hairdressers, having previously been run as a Ladies Hairdressers by a well known flambouyant Nottingham character, Albert Brown.
Rebecca Wilcockson ran a Milliner's business for many years in the shop at the left-hand end of the block of four shops at the front of the photograph. She died in January 1967.
Left is Hempshill Lane, which links with Main Street, onto which the buildings seen in the background front. The building on the left edge is the 'Bull & Butcher' Hotel (rear), which closed August 1975 and is awaiting demolition. Text from Reg Baker 1976.
