Description:
A house existed on this site prior to 1832 but most if not all of the red brick building seen here dated from its ownership by Nottingham banker and North Nottinghamshire MP Frederick Chatfield Smith (known as 'Banker Smith'), who purchased the property in the 1860s.
In 1921 the Hall was acquired by Trent College and used as a preparatory school, before passing to Nottingham University in 1965. The University planned to develop the site as a postgraduate centre but the house was damaged by fire, became derelict and was then demolished around 1966-68.
Website contributor Roy Thomas writes: 'I was educated at Bramcote Hall, 1962-65. This photograph does not resemble any part of that building.'
Picture the Past comments: 'Having looked at some large scale maps we think this is definitely Bramcote Hall and shows the entrance or north front. The reason it may not be recognisable to anyone who attended the Trent College preparatory school that occupied the building from 1921 until 1965, is that at some date prior to 1938 a single storey extension was added onto the north-east corner and that this would have necessitated the removal of the tile-hung porch seen here.'
