Description:
Close-up of an Enquiry ('700' series) operating position in the Archer GPO telephone exchange. This exchange was built in 1956 and became operative 23 July 1958.
The lower three strips are for incoming calls, the upper three are for dialing out. The upper strip on the right are direct lines to automatic exchanges under the control of Castle and Archer and can only be used during the engineers normal working hours when they are in attendance. Key-senders have replaced the dials on the '700' suite.
The bin of cards between the positions show every name, number and its type of line (single, shared-service; private branch exchange (PBX) and exclusive GPO lines) on every automatic exchange under the control of Archer.
