Description: Seen from the City side of the old bridge on Meadow Lane, which is in the centre of the photo. Water was held back by the piles seen covering the bridge portal. The boats seen on the left bank of the canal are normally moored alongside Turneys leather works. The alternative to adopting this method of holding back the water would have been to drain the canal from Castle Lock near Wilford Street, a mile and a half away, thus depriving some industrial concerns adjacent to the canal of their industrial water supply. On the right is London Road. Truman Road is where the poster boardings are. In the right background is the 'Town Arms Hotel' on Trent Bridge. The centre and left background shows Turney Brothers leather works, and on the left foreground are the premises of Henton & Chattell, which front onto Iremonger Road.
