About this image

Developed as a public leisure space promenade (along with Corporation oaks, Robin Hood Chase, Queen's Walk, The Arboretum, The Forest and Castle Grounds) after the 1845 Enclosure Act, because of concern about providing leisure interests and recreational walks for the working classes. Elm Avenue, seen here, was planted with long lines of elm trees, which were tragically affected by the 1970's outbreak of Dutch Elm Disease, and had to be cut down.
