Description:
Dating from the seventeenth century, this is believed to be one of the oldest maltings in the Mansfield area. Originally, it would have had a pantiled roof, later replaced with slate as seen here. Other modifications included alterations to the windows in 1911.
There is a widely held impression locally that the building was at one time used as a prison but in fact there is no evidence that it was ever anything other than a floor maltings. It was operated by the Mansfield Brewery Company for around a century until 1974, after which a public enquiry prevented its demolition, the building being listed Grade II in August 1975. It was then acquired by Mansfield District Council.
Up until 1880 tax was levied on malt and the Excise marks were still visible on the beams inside the building when malting ceased.
