Description:
Website contributor Geoff Wakefield says 'My father Sam Wakefield (deceased) was the landlord of the Earl Howe from 1961 to 1966. When a child I explored the beer cellars under the building and found an entrance to a spiral staircase cut into the sandstone, which descended to sandstone caves below the building. However, a brick wall prevented any further access/discovery. It was believed the caves were used as air raid shelters during WWII and even linked through to the City's Castle cave system'.
