Description:
The Co-operative Stores shop on the east side of Main Street looking north, advertised as grocers, bakers and drapers. The shop's two-wheeled horse-drawn local delivery vehicle and the staff are posed in front. The buildings shown here were later demolished and replaced by a modern purpose-built store. The gentleman stood on the right on the steps is James Stanley who was the Manager of the Cooperative Stores. The lady on the photo is his daughter Annie Elizabeth Stanley (later Glazebrook) who worked there as a Storekeepers Assistant. Records show that James was the Manager of the store between 1888 and 1894. He was living elsewhere in the village at the time of the 1881 and 1901 Census, but exactly what date he commenced and finished at the Co-op we do not know. Co-op Archives say they have no records to confirm his exact dates of employment. His daughter Bertha Agnes Stanley also worked there as a Storekeepers Assistant. (Additional information very kindly supplied by Alison Glazebrook, Great Great Granddaughter of James).
