Description:
A church is known to have existed here in 1299 but the present building largely dates from 1705, albeit incorporating some elements of an older and larger building. It was listed Grade II-star in 1965. This view shows the Gregory Benefaction Board (located on the south wall of the tower), which records a bequest by the Reverend Edward Gregory intended to produce the sum of 19s.4d (£0.92p) 'to be distributed annually, the first payment whereof became due in January 1826' for 'the benefit of the Poor of Owthorpe'. To put this in perspective, some years later in 1853 tiny Owthorpe consisted of no more than '25 humble dwellings, 143 inhabitants, and 1,450 acres of cold clay land'.
