Lord Byron, the 6th Baron Byron of Rochdale was a famous English Nobleman and politician best known for his poetry. His ancestral home is Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire. Byron remains widely read today and regarded as one of the greatest English poets and leading figures in the Romantic Movement. His life was littered with scandal. Byron racked up huge debts and engaged in a number of illicit love affairs with both men and women. His excesses lead to the eventual breakup of his marriage and Byron left England forever in 1816. His travels took him through Italy, Switzerland and Greece. Lord Byron died on the 19th April 1824 in Missolonghi, Greece from a violent fever brought about; it is believed by the use of unsterilised surgical implements.
